Test timing
Do I need a test booked?
No. The lesson can help identify priorities before booking or tidy up skills when a date is already approaching.
Restricted licence test preparation
A practical 60-minute lesson to identify the skills that need attention, strengthen safe driving habits and give you clear priorities for practice before the test.
At a glance
Who it is for
Restricted test preparation is for learner licence holders who have a test booked, are thinking about booking, or want professional help with the skills expected of a safe, increasingly independent driver.
You do not need to feel fully test-ready before enquiring. Tell Alistair about your experience, recent practice and any upcoming test date so the lesson can focus on the most useful areas.
What the lesson covers
The lesson follows what Alistair observes on the day and the areas most relevant to the student’s current stage.
Core test skills
Practise effective mirror and blind-spot checks, clear signalling, safe gap selection, suitable speed, following distance and accurate road position.
Road situations
Develop planning and judgement through turns, lane changes, merging and a range of suitable local road conditions. Difficulty is matched to the student’s experience.
Vehicle movement
Work on the observation and vehicle control needed for manoeuvres such as reverse parallel parking or a three-point turn, along with smooth steering, braking and acceleration.
The next step
At the end of the drive, Alistair explains what was working, which behaviours need more consistency and what to practise next with a support driver.
How the session works
The session begins with a brief conversation about recent practice, confidence and the intended test timing. Most of the hour is a practical drive in conditions suited to the student’s ability, with coaching on the priorities Alistair observes.
The lesson finishes with a verbal debrief and specific ideas for supervised practice.
This is professional test preparation, not an official NZTA practical test. No driving school can guarantee a pass.
Enquire about a lessonBefore the lesson
Bring your current learner licence and any glasses or contact lenses required for driving. Confirm the vehicle to be used when booking so the lesson can be planned appropriately.
You may learn in your own automatic vehicle by prior agreement. Manual lessons require a suitable student-supplied manual vehicle. Any student vehicle must be safe, legal and appropriately insured; for a new or inexperienced driver, Alistair may require a dual-control vehicle for the first lesson.

Meeting and booking
Students usually meet Alistair outside Greenland Café in the car park at The Zone shopping centre, off Manukau Road and Subway Road in Pukekohe.
Availability is confirmed by arrangement. New students can call, email or use the enquiry form; the form is a useful starting point because it gives Alistair the driver’s experience, goals and availability.
